To Die For

New Zealand’s MSN gives us the Weirdest Deaths in History. Among the winners: fatal hilarity and swallowing a toothpick. I’m not sure about the choices, but the accompanying anecdotes do provide a dose of history. Late Update (12/21/06): Moronland gets right to the point with its own list of The Dumbest Deaths in Recorded History.

Finding History at Home

A couple months ago, my friend Rob sent me a link to a great piece in the Washington Post that I somehow forgot to post. “A Homer’s Odyssey” reports the efforts of Greenbelt, Maryland resident Mark Opasnick to preserve and extend local historical memory in the Washington, DC area. A Montgomery County Income Assistance SpecialistContinue reading “Finding History at Home”

Virtual Apple

For those of us who grew up with an Apple II computer in the home, Virtual Apple provides a timesucking trip down memory lane. Dedicated to “preserving a generation of Apple 2 disks,” Virtual Apple emulates old Apple 2 games in your web browser. Ironically, because they’re powered by Active X, the games only workContinue reading “Virtual Apple”

Color Me Badd

Complementing our earlier look at the “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time” is the The 50 Worst Artists in Music History. Enjoy! Or not.

Tops of 2006

Yesterday Sharon inadvertently reminded me that we’re coming up on Found History‘s first anniversary by sending me a link to this list of the top five movie posters of 2006. Not only is the link a good fit for the Tops of All Time series (see also All Time On-Screen Hackers and More Movie Mosts),Continue reading “Tops of 2006”

What Not to Wear

A couple weeks ago I recklessly hypothesized that European sports fans are more likely than their North American counterparts to conceptualize history in terms of best and worst. Not surprisingly, it turns out this is a completely bogus conjecture, and to prove I’m not afraid to admit my mistakes, I’d like to point you twoContinue reading “What Not to Wear”

More History of Gaming

Friday it was t-shirts. Today it’s playing cards: Over the past 30 years, video games have become an integral part of our culture, and the video game industry has become a multi-billion dollar business. Follow the journey of video games from the first console to the present gear. So says Cybereye, the Austrian firm thatContinue reading “More History of Gaming”

Wii-cked Awesome

As we say back in Mass., this one is “wicked pissah”—Nintendo history on a t-shirt.

Formula Un

I said in the introductory post to this series that it’s difficult for a blog like this one to draw any firm conclusions. I stand by that statement, but patterns do emerge. Over the past week or so of scouring the web for “best ever” and “top N” lists, I have started to see twoContinue reading “Formula Un”

High Rollers

InsideEdge, a British sports betting website, has published a list of the “top 25 most outrageous gambles of all time.” Most of these big bets come from the world of sports (especially cricket and soccer), but Nick Lesson’s disastrous turn at Baring Brothers also makes the list, as does Michael Jackson’s move from Motown toContinue reading “High Rollers”
